It was Christmas morning for the BMBL last night as we kicked off the 23/24' regular season. After a long off-season of anticipation we are off and running.
Week 1 results saw 4Life Fitness defeat Ewyn Weight Loss 62-35 behind Jacob White's 20 point performance. Hopefully Janet (owner of Ewyn and Jacob's mother) still provides her sponsorship fee after the tough loss. Player of the game goes to Josh Kleinlagel who lit it up from behind the arc and provided some fluidity to the 4Life offence. Devin Burns was Mr. Reliable for Ewyn dropping 16 points and 6 rebounds. Ewyn looks to bounce back against Rideau Realty in week 2.
Game 2 at BCI had the reigning champions Make Your Move Kingston host Rideau Realty. This ended up being the game of the week and was decided by 4 points. Rideau's continuity and chemistry played a big role in the early season matchup and it showed as they knocked off the champs 58-54. Player of the game honours go to Silas Burns for his 7 3-point performance.
Over at TISS game 1 had Super Simple Sheets and Eldridge Electric squaring off. Without reigning MVP Cody Hache available, Eldridge Electric fell to Super Simple Sheets 62-49. Rob Fullarton and Josh Van Wieren both flirted with a double double and player of the game Nate Rylands added 22 points and 5 boards to the cause.
Our final game of week 1 saw Angelo's Restaurant vs. Mighty Valley Coffee. This Coffee might need some Onion as they lost 55-30 to a very solid Angelo's Restaurant. Player of the game goes to Brian Kloosterman who dropped 18 points and 12 rebounds. Angelo's Restaurant will play 4Life Fitness in their week 2 matchup, while Mighty Valley Coffee gets a bye week to re-group.
Week 1 players of the game: Josh Kleinlagel, Brian Kloosterman, Nate Rylands and Silas Burns are invited to join us next week after the games at the Barley Mow. Your first pint is on us.
After 1 week of games here are our new, updated power rankings:
Super Simple Sheets (+1)
Knocking off the 1 seed it only makes sense that this weeks Power Rankings leader is Super Simple. Twin Towers Rob and Josh will make it difficult for offences to find any sort of groove or inside scoring, while ball carriers Bob and Tim look to make defenders second guess themselves all year with ball fakes and effective ball movement.
2. Angelo's Restaurant (+1)
Coming off a 25 point win Angelo's had several players stuff the stat sheet. BK dropped 18/12, while Dave Dufort added 15/9, and captain Josh Parson's contributed 10/6. This 3 headed monster will demand attention all year and make undersized teams dread this matchup. It is still early in the season but Angelo's and Super Simple Sheets are on a collision course.
3. Rideau Realty (+1)
In the Game of the Week Rideau Realty showed why they are one of the most feared teams in the league. Adding more shooting to their already difficult to guard squad, this group looks to make their way up the power rankings each week. Rideau had 2 players get double digit rebounding which will be key for their performance week in and week out as the league overall has gotten much bigger.
4. 4Life Fitness (+2)
Making the biggest move in the power rankings is the 4Life squad. Ewyn Weight Loss had an 8-0 opening run in the first quarter, before 4Life put their foot in the ground and pulled ahead by 20 before half. Relying on efficient 3 point shooting from White, Benson and Kleinlagel 4Life controlled the pace of the game against a scrappy Ewyn team. 4Life will be put to the test in week 2 against a strong Angelo's squad.
5. Make Your Move Kingston (-)
Staying put at the 5 slot we have MYMK who lost a narrow one 58-54. This squad had very well balanced scoring with 5 players over 9 points but also had 3 players not score. In order for this team to be successful they will have to find some bench scoring. The defending champs have a bye week 2, and a prove it week 3 matchup vs. Super Simple Sheets.
6. Eldridge Electric (-5)
The slide from 1st to 6th may seem steep, but without MVP Cody Hache this team is not complete. Once Cody returns to the floor EE will be a force night in and night out. Erik Goodberry stepped up into the scorers role in his absence and had a team high 17.
7. Ewyn Weight Loss Studio (-)
Losing is never fun, but here's something to pick your spirits up. Ewyn should have a bounce back game week 2 with their big man Jake Chester returning to the line up, and a healthy Dustin Drury. This team showed flashes of elite ball movement and crisp shooting, now it's time to put it together. Devin Burns is a dark horse candidate for league MVP if this team can put some wins together.
8. Mighty Valley Coffee (-)
Missing their first round draft pick due to injury we didn't get a good look for what this team will be capable of. With lots of speed and shooting ability Mighty Valley Coffee should win some games, and make the older teams in the league run. MVC will have to get creative with their defensive schemes to make up for height.
We hope to see you all at the Mow after the week 2 matchups!
