After what felt like the longest break in men’s league history, the BMBL finally made it back onto the court. Weeks of cancellations, group chats full of “any update?” messages. However, on Wednesday night the whistles blew, and men’s league basketball was back. Rusty legs and wildly optimistic expectations were on full display—but hey, at least this time the weather issue was whether or not your team would win/lose.
Week 8 games saw a similar result to week 1 as Mike Far GM beat 4Life, Tomlinson beat Rideau Realty, Super Simple Sheets beat Ewyn Weight Loss, and the only nuance was Podium Sports defeating Lonesome Pine Farm to keep things interesting.
STANDINGS & POWER RANKINGS AFTER WEEK 8
1. Super Simple Sheets (4–0) – Power Rank: 1 (–) Standings (1st place)
This squad is starting to look like an all-star team and a lock for the Geldhart Cup.
Streak: W4
Co-Players of the game: Malcolm Spence with a huge effort on both sides of the ball. Dustin Drury earning co-honours with an efficient 19 points in the win.
2. Mike Fair GM (4–1) – Power Rank: 2 (-) Standings (2nd place)
At this point Mike Fair GM sits in a 1B situation. If they can gel as a group they're another team looking to separate themselves in as Geldhart lock. Streak: W3
Player of the game: Matt Tanton for his ability to collapse the defence on drives and consistently make the right play. He was a difference maker in the game with his effort.
3. Tomlinson (3–2) – Power Rank: 3 (+2) Standings (3rd place)
Back to the 3rd spot in the power rankings once again. Can this team crack into the top 2 with a win against Super Simple Sheets in Week 9s game of the week!
Streak: W2
Player of the game: Nick Everrett once again gets the nod as his physical play style is causing issues for teams on the boards. Everrett might be the leagues top rebounder at this pace.
4. Lonesome Pine Farms (2–2) – Power Rank: 4 (-1) Standings (4th place)
On a 2 game skid LPF is looking to get back in the win column next week against Ewyn Weight Loss in what is sure to be a highly competitive game with a must win feel from both sides. Streak: L2
5. Rideau Realty (2–2) – Power Rank: 5 (-1) Standings (5th place)
Could easily be in the 4 spot but the slight point differential leans towards LPF. Rideau has been in closely contested games every week and will bounce between the 3-5 spot as they battle it out with Tomlinson and Lonesome Pine Farms for the 3-seed. Streak: L1
6. Podium Sports Therapy (2–3) – Power Rank: 6 (+1) Standings (6th place)
Podium has hit rhythm recently and are trending upwards- however their hearts may break on valentines day when White gets season ending knee surgery. Podium has a big matchup vs. Super Simple Sheets in week 9. A win would move them into the top half of the power rankings. Streak: W1
Player of the game: Tim Orbine used his veteran presence to close out the win.
7. 4Life Fitness (1–3) – Power Rank: 7 (-1) Standings (7th place)
An underwhelming start leaves lots of question marks. Having yet to play a single game at full strength these guys have much to figure out before April if they're going to make a push. Streak: L2
8. Ewyn Weight Loss (0–5) – Power Rank: 8 (–) Standings (8th)
It's all about the playoffs baby. Anyone can win one game so here hoping to this squad gelling in the 1v8 game on April 8th. Streak: L5
FINAL THOUGHTS
Super Simple Sheets & Mike Fair GM have the top spots locked down. Tomlinson, Lonesome Pine Farms, Rideau Realty all fight for seeding in the 3-5 spot while Podium Sports Therapy is a win or 2 away from joining the mix. 4Life Fitness and Ewyn Weight Loss need to make a push now before the gap in standings widens down the stretch.
Week 9s game of the week features Super Simple Sheets and Tomlinson! The 1 and 3 seeds are sure to put on a show.
