Week 1- Brockville Youth 7 on 7 Football

August 8th marked the start of the Brockville Youth 7 on 7 Football League. Kicking off with our grade 4-7 Juniors (White vs. Red) at 10:00am. The first points of the season came off an interception by Nate Latimer (White). The first touchdown of the summer was also scored by Nate Latimer on a pass from Grant Roney. Roney’s TD pass put White up 8-0 early as the point after attempt was incomplete from the 5 yard line. It did not take Red long at all to find the endzone, scoring on the next series Iain Baird found Jackson Jodoin for 6, but missed the point after attempt (8-5). The next score came on an Interception from Jeff Barrington (White) to make the game 11-5. White lost the lead on the next series as Baird led the offence down the field and ended the drive on a TD pass to Luke Whitton (Red). Following the missed point after the score sits at 13-11 Red for a quick 8 point swing.

Following half-time Braxton Herbison showed his athleticism on an interception that made the score 16-11 Red with 20 minutes remaining in the second half. Baird found Luke Whitton in the end zone for the second time deep for the young QB’s 3rd TD on the day and Whitton’s 2nd TD catch. The final score following the failed point after attempt was 21-11 Red. This week's players of the game are Iain Baird (Red) and Nathan Latimer (White).

Our next game on this long triple header in 30 degree heat was our Intermediate Red vs. White game. Athletes grade 8-10 squared off at 11:15am for what soon became a passing clinic. On the first drive of the game Mackie Holmes found Andrew Lassale for 6 and found Liam Saumure on the point after for a 7-0 White lead. On the next drive Merrick Palmer found Braxton Herbison (affiliate player from the junior program) for a TD. The 6th grade athlete who caught an interception earlier today with his age group also scored a TD with the Intermediates. Sitting at 7-5 as Red misses their first point-after of the early season. On the very next play Holmes threw a TD to Liam Saumure for the catch and run. The point after was missed and the score 12-5 White. Mackie Holmes was all over the field as he hauled in an interception to add to the lead. Andrew Lassale found the endzone again from Holmes to put the score 20-5 after Red successfully defended the point-after attempt.

After half-time Jack Broniszeski hauled in an interception for White giving them a 23-5 lead and the ball at the 40 yard line in Holmes hands'. Mackie repaid the favour by throwing the next touchdown to Jack Broniszeski for his first touchdown of the year. The point after was caught by Reid Jardine. Liam Saumure pulls in an interception and adds to the lead (33-5). Andrew Lassale completed the hat trick hauling in another pass from Holmes. Mackie Holmes made his presence felt one more time grabbing a second half interception in the final moments. The last play of the game came on an interception from Jacob Beatty (Red) for their first points of the second half. Red played a hard fought game but had a number of players absent. We look forward to this rematch next week with both teams at full roster strength. Final 41-8 White. This week’s players of the game are Andrew Lassale (White) who had 3 touchdown receptions in his 7 on 7 debut and Jacob Beatty (Red) who was a target all day offensively and led the team defensively with an interception.

Our final exhibition on the day kicked off at 12:30pm with our grade 11-13 Senior athletes. This game came down to the wire and was an absolute thriller. Birthday Boy Brody Fairbairn hits Zack Rubert for 6 that quickly turned into 4 with the incomplete 2-point after attempt. Red took the early 4-0 lead and on their next offensive possession turn that into 11-0 as Fairbairn hit Evan Cordingley for the score. The point after was successful to Liam Saumure. The 8th grade QB Mackie Holmes who also plays up with the grade 11-13’s got on the scoreboard shortly after hitting Jordan Serson for the jump ball TD. Cordingley intercepted the point after attempt (deadball) and we sat at 11-5 Red. Fairbairn hit Cordingley again for 6 as the duo drove the field. Rubert caught the point after to put us at 18-5 Red at the half.

Following half a quick Holmes to Serson touchdown put White back in the hunt at 18-10 Red (missed PA). Mackie Holmes wasn't done for the day as he hit Kody Kirton for the major and failed to complete the two point conversion leaving the score at 18-14. Evan Cordingley took over the helm at QB and hit none other than Brody Fairbairn in the endzone as the duo has been on both ends of all scoring today for Red. Cordingley was successful on the 2 point conversion hitting Rubert again. After a Holmes to Ola touchdown and a successful 2 point to Kirton the score was 26-22 Red heading into the final minutes.

On the next drive Mackie Holmes intercepted the ball and brought the score to 26-25 and gave himself the ball with one final play left on the clock and 40 yards of field to go. As Holmes dropped back to throw his hail-mary into the end zone Cordingley tracked the ball from centre field and picked it off to end the game 29-25 Red. Players of the game this week are Mackie Holmes (White) and Evan Cordingley (Red).
